TROPIC® or ISOfrane®? How to Choose Your Dive Strap

July 14, 2026

Synchron makes the two most storied rubber dive straps in watchmaking: the TROPIC®, born in 1955, and the ISOfrane®, the ventilated legend of the 1960s. Both are made in Italy from vulcanised natural rubber, and both are entirely silicone-free. Since we make both, here is an honest guide to choosing.

Two originals from one maker

The TROPIC® is the original basket-weave strap: slim, tapered and light, with a cross-hatched surface that breathes and drains. The ISOfrane®, revived by Synchron in 2010, is the original ladder-slot strap: a little more substantial, with a row of open ventilation slots and a ribbed underside. Neither is a copy of anything. Each is the strap the others imitate.

Choose the TROPIC® when…

You want the slimmest, lightest, most classic option. The taper keeps the buckle side trim, the weave keeps the wrist dry, and on any 1950s to 1970s diver that originally offered a TROPIC®, it is the historically correct choice. It is also the strap to pick if you prefer your watch, not your strap, to do the talking. New to it? Here is what makes a TROPIC® strap.

Choose the ISOfrane® when…

You want maximum airflow and a bit more wrist presence. The open slots move more air than any woven texture can, the ribbed underside grips through heat and water, and the three buckle options let you style it. It also comes in 24mm for larger modern divers, a width the TROPIC® does not offer.

The honest answer

Most collectors we know end up with both and swap by watch and season. Whichever you choose, you are getting a genuine original: Italian vulcanised rubber, a real trademark and no silicone anywhere. Make sure it is the real thing either way with our genuine TROPIC® guide.

Your questions, answered

Are TROPIC® and ISOfrane® made by the same company?

Yes. Both are owned by Synchron and both are produced in Italy from vulcanised natural rubber, with no silicone, no FKM and no PFAS.

Which strap breathes better?

Both are built to ventilate. The ISOfrane® moves the most air through its open ladder slots, while the TROPIC® breathes through its basket-weave texture and drains water quickly.

What sizes do they come in?

The TROPIC® comes in 20mm and 22mm. The ISOfrane® comes in 20mm, 22mm and 24mm.

Which one is right for a vintage diver?

Match the strap to the watch’s own history. Watches that wore a TROPIC® in period, like 1950s to 1970s divers, look right on a TROPIC®. Watches paired with ISOfrane® in the late 1960s and 70s suit the ISOfrane®.
