Genuine TROPIC® Strap: How to Tell the Original from Copies

July 14, 2026

Search for a tropic strap online and you will find dozens of basket-weave bands from dozens of makers. All of them borrowed the look from one strap: the TROPIC®, in continuous existence as a registered trademark since 1955. Telling the original from the copies takes about ten seconds once you know the four checks.

Check one: the name inside

Flip the strap over. Since 1955, every genuine example has carried the TROPIC® name embossed on the inner side. This is the single decisive test. A strap without the embossed name is simply not a TROPIC®, no matter how faithful the weave looks from the front.

The weave can be copied. The name inside cannot.

Check two: the material

The genuine strap is made in Italy from a proprietary vulcanised natural-rubber compound: silicone-free, PFAS-free, non-toxic and hypoallergenic. Imitations are usually silicone, and silicone gives itself away quickly. It feels slick and plasticky, it collects dust and lint like a magnet, and it lacks the firm, springy structure of vulcanised rubber. If the strap feels cheap, it is.

Check three: the lineage

TROPIC® is not just a name on a box. When Synchron acquired the brand in 2003 it took the original company whole: the trademark, the blueprints and the tooling. No imitator can buy that lineage, which is why no imitator can honestly claim it. The full journey is in our TROPIC® history.

Check four: the seller

The surest route is the shortest one. Buy direct from the brand and the other three checks take care of themselves: the embossed name, the Italian rubber and the seventy years of heritage all come with the strap.

Your questions, answered

What is the fastest way to spot a genuine TROPIC® strap?

Look at the inner side. Every genuine strap has carried the embossed TROPIC® name there since 1955. No embossed name means it is not a TROPIC®.

Are basket-weave straps from other brands real TROPIC® straps?

No. TROPIC® is a registered trademark, not a pattern name. Straps from other makers are imitations of the design, whatever they are called in a listing.

What is the genuine strap made from?

A proprietary vulcanised natural-rubber compound produced in Italy. It is silicone-free, PFAS-free, non-toxic and hypoallergenic. Most copies are silicone.

Where should I buy one?

Direct from the brand. tropicstrap.com and the official Synchron shop sell the genuine strap, made with the original blueprints and tooling.

TROPIC® and ISOfrane® are registered trademarks owned by Synchron. Rolex®, Blancpain®, Omega®, Tudor®, Zodiac®, LIP®, Aquadive®, Aquastar® and DOXA® are trademarks of their respective owners. These companies are not affiliated with tropicstrap.com and do not endorse the TROPIC® strap.
